Spay and Neuter: A Routine Surgery with Brilliant Benefits

The decision to spay and neuter your pet should not be a difficult one. The benefits far outweigh any risks. Our team at Riversbend Animal Hospital in Big Rapids is well-experienced in both the procedure itself and its long-lasting health value. As a responsible owner, you plan to give your pet the highest quality of life, and a spay and neuter surgery plays an essential role in that plan.

The Value of Spay and Neuter Surgery

Spay and neuter surgery helps curb a number of undesirable behaviors in your pet, and even more importantly, it has significant medical benefits as well!

Below are benefits that affect your pet's behavior:

  • Male cats and dogs are less likely to mark their territory wherever they feel the need.
  • Female cats will not go into heat, which keeps them from mewling and urinating frequently during the 4 or 5 days they are in heat.
  • Male dogs are less likely to roam away from home and should have a less aggressive temperament. Additionally, neutering decreases their urge to mount other dogs and objects.

Equally, if not more important, are the medical benefits of sterilization:

  • Spaying reduces the risk of uterine infections and breast tumors in females, particularly if performed before her first heat cycle.
  • Neutering prevents testicular cancer and reduces the risk of prostate problems in males.

Post-Surgery Care

After a spay and neuter procedure, your pet will need a bit of extra TLC at home. We will provide pain management reduce discomfort as well as post-surgical advice, tailored to your pet’s needs. However, there are a handful of tips to follow for every pet, every time. Keep these things in mind:

  • Your pet needs time to recover in peace, so find him or her a quiet place indoors away from other animals.
  • Prevent infection or further damage by keeping your pet from licking the incision. An Elizabethan collar is often the best remedy.
  • Keep your pet from running and jumping for about 2 weeks following surgery.
  • While it might seem like a warm bath is a good idea, refrain from bathing your pet for at least ten days post-surgery.
  • As always, constant vigilance is essential. Keep an eye on your pet’s incision to check it is healing properly. Contact us right away should any swelling, discharge or excessive redness appear. Other problems could include loss of appetite, vomiting or diarrhea.
