Diagnostics
Often, visible indicators are only a small part of the real problem with a pet. Luckily at Riversbend Animal Hospital, we offer cat and dog imaging & diagnostics for the Big Rapids community that allows us to see beyond the physical symptoms, so we can diagnose and treat the illness at its source.

Ultrasonography and Radiography
Our well-trained doctors excel in both ultrasonography and radiography, and we use them daily to ensure we are treating every pet appropriately. Common reasons for an ultrasound or radiographs (X-ray) include:
- Vomiting and/or diarrhea
- Heart problems
- Foreign body location
- Fluid buildup
- Focused assessment with sonography for trauma (FAST) for urgent situations
- Digital dental radiographs
- Lameness diagnosis
- and many other internal issues!
While we do not require sedation always for these procedures, it may be necessary as complete immobility is the only way to obtain a clear image. Any possible sedation will be discussed with the owner before any action is taken.
We are equipped to perform radiographs for the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA).
When we perform our OFA radiographs, we do require that all patients are sedated for this procedure. Positioning of a pet is of the utmost importance to ensure that the Foundation receives the highest quality images and there is minimal stress during the procedure. Please call today to schedule an appointment or we can answer any questions you may have about our protocol.
In-House Laboratory Testing
With our extensive equipment, we analyze much of your pet’s testing and other pet diagnostics procedures in-house. You and your pet are not left waiting long for answers. The faster the turn-around, the faster we can start treatment. Typically, we do complete blood counts, biochemistry testing, cytology, and urinalysis in-house. For more advanced procedures such as histopathology on biopsies, cultures, and fecal testing, we have a trusted lab to which we send out samples for analysis.
